Fur Rondy - Run With The Reindeer
Inspired by the running of the bulls in Spain, today was the third Fur Rondy Running of the Reindeer. This is no doubt one of the coolest experiences you can have in Alaska. For $25, you can line up on Fourth Avenue to sprint two city blocks, followed ten seconds later by a couple dozen reindeer (domesticated caribou).
Rather than run with the animals, I decided to place life, limb, and $30k worth of video equipment (by far the most valuable of the three), right in the middle of Fourth Avenue as the pack stampeded toward me. As it turns out, you're a lot safer in the path of reindeer than humans. As you'll see in the video, even running upwards of 35mph, their powerful hooves claw the snow so well they were able to veer off to the side at the last second when they saw themselves barreling towards my tripod and camera. I came very close, however, to getting knocked to the ground by runners.
My apologies to those who nearly tripped over me--but I got the shots! Read more »
Mt. McKinley from Talkeetna - Timelapse Video
Click above to play. The morning of September 6, 2009, I set my tripod up on the lawn of the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge for this timelapse. I started the sequence at 8:57am, then left the hotel to head into town. My camera ran until all the battery power was drained at 10:14am. I came back around 11am, and no one had touched the camera--that's Talkeetna for you!
This video is composed of 2085 individual frames--compressed into an 8-second timeline! Read more »
